LOCATION & TIME
Four weekly lessons are scheduled monthly in 30-minute, 45-minute, or 60-minute reservations. If there is a fifth week in any given month, that week may be used to schedule makeup lessons OR an extra lesson. In-person lessons will occur at my home studio.
Zoom lessons may be an option in case of inclement weather, out-of-area students, or other exceptional circumstances. In very special cases, in-person lessons may occur at other locations and incur an additional travel fee based on mileage rates in the State of Utah OR receipts for travel expenses.
Note: Parents and guardians are welcome to observe their children's lessons. Please do not bring students' friends, pets, or young siblings to the studio.
TRIAL LESSON FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Prospective students must schedule a 30-minute trial lesson before committing to monthly lessons. This trial lesson is designed to assess the student's current skill level, understand their learning style, and establish a rapport with the student. Monthly tuition will be pro-rated for the remaining weeks following a student's enrollment.
TUITION/PAYMENT
Four lessons will be billed via e-mail monthly. Tuition should be paid in full before the first lesson each month. Payment may be made via the Venmo app or by check. Please make checks payable to Nicholas Maghan. Returned checks will incur a $50 service fee.
If payment is made later than the first lesson of the month, a $30 late fee will be charged per student weekly until payment is received in full. If payment is not made by the end of the month, the student may be dropped from the studio, which could disrupt their learning progress. Unpaid charges incur any fees associated with procuring payment in full.
MATERIALS
Students must have either an acoustic piano or a weighted-key electric, full-sized, 88-key keyboard with a functioning damper pedal on which they can practice at least five days a week. The teacher and student will determine the practice requirements according to the student's age and goals, ensuring that the materials are tailored to your specific needs and learning style.
The instructor will assign method books, technical exercises, theory pages, and other lesson repertoire and assignments, all designed to help you progress in your musical journey. The student is expected to bring assigned materials to each lesson, as well as a three-ringed binder in which I can write assignments, lesson notes, and any other communication, ensuring that you have all the tools you need to succeed.
Students must also keep track of their practice time in this binder.
STUDIO MASTERCLASSES & RECITALS
Students should expect to prepare one to two pieces for two studio masterclasses (one in the fall and one in early spring), during which we will perform for each other. There will also be one Spring Recital, during which students will prepare two pieces for performance in front of an audience, usually consisting of their invited friends and family.
If a student wishes to perform more frequently, I am delighted to help create and present those additional performance opportunities.
SUMMER LESSONS
TBD
UNEXCUSED CANCELLATIONS
Lessons canceled by students with twenty-four (24) hours advance notice will be rescheduled, as available. Lessons canceled by the piano instructor will always be rescheduled for a makeup lesson or credited to the student's ledger for the upcoming month. Students must pay for cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice. No refund will be given for no-shows or tardiness. If you think you will be delayed, please call to let me know when you will arrive. Any time missed in a lesson due to student tardiness will be forfeited, and the lesson will only be given for the remainder of the scheduled time.
EXCUSED CANCELLATIONS
If a student is sick enough that they will miss work or school, please do not come to your lesson. A makeup lesson can be scheduled or credited to the following month if the student can provide a doctor's note for the date the lesson was missed.
MAKEUP LESSONS
If there is a fifth week in a month, that week can be used as a makeup lesson as schedule permits. Sometimes, a credit for an excused lesson may be credited to the student's upcoming account charges.
DISMISSAL/VOLUNTARY QUITTING
If a student is dismissed from the studio, they will not receive reimbursement for unfulfilled lessons. Reasons for dismissal include non-payment, failure to meet weekly practice goals, consistent no-shows for lessons, damage to studio property, or other repeatedly arising issues.
If a student chooses to leave the studio voluntarily, they should submit their plans to leave in writing to Nicholas Maughan with at least 30 days' notice. They will be expected to fulfill payment for the remainder of the billed month(s), whether or not lessons are taught.
